Hotel with pool at dusk

Sometimes the perfect winter vacation is simply quiet: no splash parks, no cannonballs into the pool, just a good book, a cocktail and the sound of the waves. Adults-only resorts have become one of the fastest-growing segments of the Canadian sun market. Here are the best areas to find them and how to choose well.

What does adults-only really mean?

Most adults-only resorts set a minimum age of 18, but some accept guests from 16 and a few set the bar at 21. Beyond the age rule, these resorts usually offer more à la carte restaurants, quieter pools, spa packages and evening entertainment designed for adults. Some are romantic and calm; others are lively party resorts. Read the description and recent reviews to know which kind you are booking.

1. Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen, Mexico

The Riviera Maya probably has the largest concentration of adults-only resorts in the world, from mid-range properties to ultra-luxury hideaways. Couples can mix beach days with Tulum’s ruins, cenote swims and dinners on Playa del Carmen’s Fifth Avenue.

2. Cancún hotel zone, Mexico

For couples who want energy, Cancún’s hotel zone has adults-only resorts within minutes of nightlife, shopping and restaurants. Look for a resort on the calmer north side or the lagoon if you want to swim easily.

3. Negril and Montego Bay, Jamaica

Jamaica practically invented the couples-only resort, and it remains one of the most romantic destinations in the Caribbean. Negril offers seven miles of beach and famous sunsets from the cliffs, while Montego Bay is close to the airport for a quick transfer. After Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, check that your resort has fully reopened.

4. Cap Cana and Uvero Alto, Dominican Republic

Just outside Punta Cana, Cap Cana has upscale resorts and a marina, while Uvero Alto is wilder and more secluded. Both areas offer good adults-only options at prices often below Mexico’s equivalent.

5. Puerto Vallarta and Costa Mujeres, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta’s Hotel Zone and Conchas Chinas area have adults-only resorts with ocean views and easy access to the romantic old town. On the Caribbean side, Costa Mujeres, north of Cancún, has newer resorts on calm, quieter beaches.

6. Saint Lucia and Antigua

For a honeymoon or a milestone anniversary, Saint Lucia’s Pitons and Antigua’s many beaches offer a more exclusive Caribbean experience. Flights from Canada are fewer and prices higher, but the scenery is unforgettable.

How to choose the right adults-only resort

  • Vibe: quiet and romantic, or social with DJs and pool parties? Reviews tell you more than photos.
  • Restaurants: check how many à la carte restaurants are included and whether reservations are needed.
  • Room category: swim-up suites, ocean views and private terraces make a big difference for couples, and are often worth the upgrade.
  • Beach quality: some resorts have a beautiful pool but a rocky or seaweed-prone beach.
  • Size: smaller resorts feel more intimate; larger ones have more choice.

Honeymoon and anniversary tips

  • Tell the resort you are celebrating when you book. Many add a bottle of wine, a cake or a room upgrade if available.
  • Book spa treatments and special dinners in advance during busy weeks.
  • Travel in early December or January for better rates than February and March.
