Cancún and Punta Cana dominate the Canadian winter market, but the Caribbean and Mexico have plenty of other sunny places with fewer crowds, local character and, sometimes, better prices. If you have done the classics and want something different this winter, here are eight destinations worth a look.
1. Huatulco, Mexico
On the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, Huatulco is spread over nine bays and dozens of small beaches surrounded by protected nature. Development is low-rise and relaxed, the water is clear for snorkelling, and you are close to the food culture of Oaxaca. Winter charter flights from Canada make it easy to reach.
Perfect for: couples and travellers who want calm and nature.
2. Mazatlán, Mexico
Mazatlán combines a long beachfront with a beautifully restored historic centre full of plazas, theatres and seafood restaurants. It is popular with Western Canadian snowbirds, prices are reasonable and the city feels authentically Mexican.
Perfect for: long stays, food lovers and budget-conscious travellers.
3. Samaná and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is more than Punta Cana. On the north coast, Puerto Plata offers mountains, a cable car and historic streets, while the Samaná peninsula has wild beaches, waterfalls and humpback whales from roughly January to March.
Perfect for: nature lovers and repeat DR visitors.
4. Roatán, Honduras
Roatán sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, one of the largest reef systems in the world. It is a top spot for affordable scuba diving and snorkelling, with a laid-back island vibe in West Bay and West End.
Perfect for: divers, snorkellers and adventurous travellers.
5. Curaçao
Aruba’s neighbour is less known among Canadians but has a lot going for it: the colourful, UNESCO-listed capital Willemstad, dozens of small coves and some of the best shore diving in the Caribbean. Like Aruba, it lies outside the main hurricane belt, with dry, sunny winters.
Perfect for: travellers who want culture plus beaches.
6. Guanacaste, Costa Rica
The dry season runs from December to April on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Base yourself near Tamarindo, Playa Hermosa or the Papagayo peninsula and add day trips to volcanoes, hot springs and wildlife refuges. Flights land in Liberia, close to the beaches.
Perfect for: active travellers, surfers and families with older kids.
7. Panama
Panama City is a modern skyline next to a historic old town, and the country offers both Pacific beaches and the Caribbean islands of Bocas del Toro and San Blas. It is a great choice if you want to combine a city break with sun.
Perfect for: curious travellers who want variety.
8. Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, Mexico
These twin destinations on the Pacific coast pair a modern hotel zone (Ixtapa) with a charming fishing town (Zihuatanejo). The pace is slower than Puerto Vallarta, and many Canadian visitors come back every winter.
Perfect for: repeat visitors who like a small-town feel.
Tips for booking less-known destinations
- Check flight schedules first: some of these places have direct flights from Canada only once or twice a week, or only from certain cities.
- Be ready to connect: a connection through a US hub or Mexico City can open more options.
- Read the latest travel advisory on travel.gc.ca for each country and region.
- Book a little earlier: with fewer hotels, good rooms in peak weeks go fast.
