All-inclusive beach resort

Every winter, the same question comes up in Canadian group chats: Cancún or Punta Cana? Both are the most booked sun destinations from Canada, both have hundreds of all-inclusive resorts and both offer direct flights from most major Canadian airports. But they are very different holidays. Here is a side-by-side comparison to help you decide.

Flights from Canada

Both destinations are about four to five hours from Toronto and Montreal, with plenty of direct flights all winter from Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat, Sunwing, Porter and others. From Western Canada, Cancún usually has more direct options than Punta Cana, so travellers from Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver often find it more convenient.

Edge: Cancún, for the number of routes and departure cities.

Beaches and water

Cancún and the Riviera Maya have powdery white sand and famous turquoise water. The hotel zone faces the open Caribbean, so some beaches have waves and strong currents, while Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres are calmer. Punta Cana and nearby Bávaro offer very long, palm-lined beaches, often protected by reefs, with gentle water that is easy for children and weaker swimmers.

Both coasts can be affected by sargassum seaweed in some seasons. Winter is usually the quietest period, but conditions change from year to year, so check recent reviews.

Edge: Punta Cana for calm, family-friendly water; Cancún for that iconic colour.

Price and value

Punta Cana is usually one of the cheapest all-inclusive destinations in the Caribbean, especially for mid-range resorts. Cancún has a wider price range: you can find budget deals, but the Riviera Maya also has many luxury and boutique properties that push the average up. For the same budget, Punta Cana often gets you a larger resort with more restaurants.

Edge: Punta Cana for value.

Things to do outside the resort

This is where Cancún clearly wins. From your resort you can visit Chichén Itzá, Tulum and Cobá ruins, swim in cenotes, snorkel with turtles in Akumal, take a ferry to Isla Mujeres or Cozumel, and enjoy the restaurants of Playa del Carmen. Getting around is easy by ADO bus, colectivo or rental car.

Punta Cana has excursions too (Saona Island, catamaran trips, Scape Park, zip-lining and the town of Higüey), but the region is more spread out and most visitors stay inside their resort.

Edge: Cancún, by a wide margin.

Food and nightlife

Mexico has one of the world’s great cuisines, and it shows: tacos, ceviche, cochinita pibil and fresh guacamole are everywhere. Cancún’s hotel zone and Playa del Carmen also have big-city nightlife. In Punta Cana, nightlife is mostly inside resorts and in a few clubs, which suits travellers who want a quieter evening.

Entry formalities

  • Mexico: a valid Canadian passport. The tourist permit is now usually issued digitally at the airport, and the officer decides how many days you can stay.
  • Dominican Republic: a valid passport and the free online e-ticket form, completed before departure and before your return flight.

Always confirm the latest requirements on travel.gc.ca before you leave.

Who should choose Cancún?

  • Travellers who want excursions, ruins, cenotes and towns to explore
  • Groups and couples who like nightlife and restaurants
  • Travellers from Western Canada looking for direct flights

Who should choose Punta Cana?

  • Families with young kids who need calm water
  • Travellers on a tighter budget who want a big resort
  • Anyone whose plan is: beach, pool, buffet, repeat

The verdict

If you want a true break where you never leave the resort, Punta Cana is hard to beat for value. If you want to mix beach time with adventure, culture and great food, Cancún and the Riviera Maya are worth the extra cost. The best move is to compare the same dates in both destinations: prices change a lot from week to week.
